San Grato chapel

Last update: 15 February 2023, 11:51

WHERE: in De Tillier street.

INFORMATION: the chapel was built, in all probability, in the fifteenth century under the patronage of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Aosta. In the eighteenth century, it began to decline until the assignment to the fire brigade (1780) and the subsequent use as a warehouse, dating back to this period the partial destruction of the fresco on the façade and the upper portion of the portal for the construction of a new entrance.

In the second half of the nineteenth century the chapel was used as tailoring and clothing store. The façade is decorated with a votive fresco offered by the citizen Malcastia in 1512, which is one of the rare examples of a painting from the beginning of the sixteenth century. The interior consists of a classroom environment. The wall of the apse of the chapel shows a fresco dating back probably to the last quarter of the sixteenth century and recently restored by the Municipality.
Currently deconsecrated, the chapel houses exhibitions of works by the “Associazione Artisti Valdostani”, who have named it “San Grato Gallery".

HOURS: to be checked with the “Associazione Artisti Valdostani”.
